We were supposed to make it to Miagao town before sunset to get a glimpse of the beautiful facade under natural light. But by the time we got there the sun had already set. And there was a twist too…
The church facade was also undergoing renovation! Scaffolding blocked our view of the intricate exterior design of the church. It was kind of disappointing after taking a long road trip into the night.
I mean after looking at pictures of Miagao on other blogs… we were missing out the true beauty of the exterior design of this church!
History. The Miagao church was built by Spanish missionaries in 1786. It was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the “Baroque Churches of the Philippines” category.
The facade features a blend of both Spanish and native influences. There’s a coconut tree symbolic of life on the facade. It was also built and fortified to protect people from raids by the Moros.
Miagao church is about a one hour drive from Iloilo city. There are jeeps which go to Miagao directly from Iloilo city.
